What Does a Pool Party Lifeguard Cost?

1 Lifeguard: $180 for the first 3 hours, then $60 for each additional hour.

2 Lifeguards: $360 for the first 3 hours, then $120 for each additional hour.

What Affects the Price?

Event size. The industry standard for supervised pool safety is 1 lifeguard per 25 swimmers. Expecting 26 or more in the water at once — or hosting mostly children — means you need two guards. That moves you to the two-guard tier at $360 for 3 hours.

For children's parties, 1:25 is a ceiling, not a recommendation. Many event safety professionals suggest 1 guard per 10 children under age 12. If 30 kids are invited to a birthday pool party, two guards is the right call.

Duration. After the 3-hour minimum, billing continues at $60 per hour for one guard or $120 per hour for two guards. A 5-hour party with one guard comes to $300. A 5-hour party with two guards is $600. Budget accordingly for longer events.

Number of guards. If you're unsure how many guests will actually swim, estimate high. The cost of a second guard is a fraction of the cost of being under-resourced in an emergency.

Day of week. Ace's Lifeguarding does not charge weekend or holiday surcharges. The price is flat regardless of when you book. Weekend slots fill faster in summer — booking early matters more than avoiding a price premium, because there isn't one.

What does not affect the price: your location within Greater Los Angeles. Calabasas, Long Beach, Beverly Hills, Malibu — no travel fees for any of them.

Why Is There a 3-Hour Minimum?

Three hours is not arbitrary. It reflects how pool parties actually unfold.

Arrival and setup take real time. A professional lifeguard arrives early, walks the pool perimeter, identifies hazards, positions equipment for fast access, and sets ground rules before the first guest enters the water. That preparation takes 20 to 30 minutes and is not optional.

Guest flow also shapes the math. Pool parties follow a predictable arc: slow start as guests arrive, a busy middle window when the pool is fullest and distractions peak, then a gradual wind-down. The highest-risk period — when the pool is most crowded and attention is most divided — is roughly the middle two hours of any event. A one-hour booking covers almost none of the risk window.

The minimum also means guards are never placed in situations where they're genuinely under-resourced. Three hours is the floor where professional lifeguarding can be done correctly.

How Does This Compare to the Cost of NOT Having a Lifeguard?

Most hosts do the math on what a lifeguard costs. Few run the numbers on what it costs not to have one.

A drowning or near-drowning at a private pool in California carries real financial exposure:

• Emergency medical: An ambulance plus ER visit in Los Angeles typically runs $3,000 to $6,000 out of pocket after insurance — per patient.

• Civil liability: California premises liability law holds homeowners responsible for guest injuries where negligence is a factor. Wrongful death or serious injury lawsuits routinely produce legal fees and judgments well into six figures.

• Homeowner's insurance gaps: Standard policies often limit or dispute coverage for organized social gatherings. Assuming your policy covers a pool party with 40 guests is a mistake worth verifying beforehand.

• Vendor injury exposure: If a hired vendor — photographer, caterer, entertainment staff — is injured near the pool, your homeowner's policy typically does not cover that. They can pursue a claim against you directly.

At $180 for 3 hours, a lifeguard is the cheapest line item on your event budget if something goes wrong. It's also the line item that prevents the emergency in the first place.
