Some of the best summer parties don't get going until the sun starts to drop. But once the light fades, a pool becomes much harder to watch — and the same gathering that felt safe at 4 p.m. carries new risk at 9 p.m. If your party runs into the evening, the water needs a plan for after dark.

Why Darkness Changes Everything

Visibility is a lifeguard's most important tool, and nightfall takes it away. In low light:

• A swimmer in trouble is nearly invisible — you can't see under the surface, and a struggling person makes little noise

• Glare and shadows hide the water — pool lights and string lights create reflections that mask what's below

• Alcohol has been flowing for hours — by evening, guests are more impaired and more likely to take risks

• People lose track of kids — in a dark, crowded yard, a child near the water is easy to miss

How to Keep an Evening Party Safe

• Light the pool fully — underwater pool lights plus deck lighting so the whole water surface and bottom are visible

• Define a clear "pool closed" time — and physically signal when swimming is done for the night

• Keep a sober adult on water watch — or better, a certified lifeguard, for the entire time the pool is open

• Do a final head count — confirm everyone is out and accounted for when the pool closes

• Keep rescue equipment lit and reachable — a reaching pole and life ring you can find in the dark
