When you hire a lifeguard, you will hear that they are American Red Cross certified — but what does that actually mean, and why should it matter to you as a host or property manager? Here is a plain-English breakdown of the credentials behind a properly qualified guard.
What Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Covers
American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the most widely recognized lifeguard certification in the United States. Earning it requires passing a demanding in-person course that combines a swimming skills test with hands-on rescue training and a written exam. A certified guard has demonstrated they can:
Recognize the signs of an active or passive drowning, often within seconds
Perform water rescues using a rescue tube and proper technique
Provide CPR and use an AED on adults, children, and infants
Deliver first aid for the injuries common around water
Manage a water emergency calmly while directing bystanders
The Three Credentials That Travel Together
A complete lifeguard certification is really three credentials bundled into one course:
Lifeguarding — water rescue and surveillance skills
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer — a higher standard than basic consumer CPR
First Aid — care for cuts, breaks, heat illness, and other on-site injuries
Why Certifications Expire
Red Cross lifeguard certification is valid for two years, and for good reason — rescue and CPR skills fade without practice and periodic retraining. This is why it matters that a guard is currently certified, not simply trained at some point in the past. An expired card is a real red flag.
What to Ask Before You Hire
A legitimate lifeguard or lifeguard company will happily confirm that their guards hold current certification and can show proof.
