Heat, Sun, and Hydration: Keeping a Summer Pool Party Safe

Updated: Jul 7

When people think about pool party safety, they think about the water. But in a Southern California summer, the heat itself sends plenty of people to urgent care — heat exhaustion, dehydration, and serious sunburn are common, sneaky, and preventable. A great host plans for the sun as carefully as the swimming.

The Heat Risks Hosts Overlook

  • Heat exhaustion — dizziness, nausea, headache, and cramps from too much sun and not enough water; it can progress to dangerous heat stroke

  • Dehydration — easy to miss in the pool, where you don't notice sweating, and alcohol makes it worse

  • Sunburn — water reflects UV and intensifies exposure; a long pool day can mean a serious burn

  • Hot surfaces — pool decks and metal rails can burn bare feet and hands

Simple Ways to Keep Guests Safe in the Sun

  • Offer shade — umbrellas, canopies, or a covered area so guests can cool down

  • Keep water everywhere — visible, free, and constant; encourage guests to drink between swims

  • Set out sunscreen — and remind guests to reapply, especially kids

  • Watch the peak hours — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the most intense sun; plan breaks

  • Know the warning signs — get anyone who feels dizzy, nauseous, or stops sweating into shade and water immediately

Where a Lifeguard Helps

A certified lifeguard isn't only watching for drowning. Our guards are trained in First Aid and recognize the early signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration — often before guests notice them in themselves. Having a trained professional on-site means someone is paying attention to the whole picture of guest safety, not just the water.
