At a party, the hot tub is where people relax with a drink and stop paying attention — which is exactly what makes it deceptively risky. A spa is smaller and warmer than a pool, and those two facts create hazards most hosts never think about.

The Risks Hosts Overlook

• Heat and alcohol together — hot water raises body temperature and lowers blood pressure; add alcohol and guests can become dizzy, drowsy, or faint quickly

• Children and deep water — a spa is often as deep as a small child is tall, with no shallow end to stand in

• Drain suction — strong spa drains can trap hair, limbs, or loose clothing against the bottom; only enter spas with compliant, dome-shaped drain covers

• Overcrowding — too many people in a small space makes it hard to notice when someone is in trouble

• Time in the water — overheating sneaks up on people; 15 minutes is a sensible limit, less for children

Simple Rules That Prevent Trouble

Keep your spa safe at a gathering with a few clear rules:

• No young children in the spa, and never unsupervised near it

• Keep the spa cover on and locked when it is not actively in use

• Limit time in the water and encourage guests to hydrate

• Keep heavily intoxicated guests out of the hot water

• Make sure the drain cover is intact and compliant before anyone gets in
