Renting a pool by the hour through Swimply, Peerspace, or a similar app has become one of the most popular ways to throw a pool party in Los Angeles without owning a pool. But whether you're the host listing your pool or the guest renting one, there's a question most people skip until it's too late: who is responsible if someone gets hurt in the water?

The short answer is that you probably are — and a certified lifeguard is the cleanest way to manage that risk.

Who's Liable at a Pool Rental?

Pool rental platforms connect a host (the pool owner) with a guest (the renter) for a few hours. Both sides carry exposure:

• Hosts are opening their property to strangers. If a guest or a guest's child is injured in your pool, you can be held liable as the property owner — and your standard homeowner's policy may not cover commercial use of your pool.

• Guests/renters are organizing the event. If you invited the people who got hurt, you can carry the same host liability you'd face throwing a party at your own home.
