Do You Need a Set Lifeguard for Your Film or TV Shoot?

If your shoot involves water — a pool, a tank, a lake, the ocean, or a rented estate with a pool — a certified set lifeguard is almost always part of a safe, properly insured production. Any time talent, stunt performers, background actors, or crew are in or near the water, someone whose only job is watching that water keeps the day safe and on schedule.

Why Productions Hire a Set Lifeguard

It usually comes down to two things: safety and insurance. Water work carries real risk, and a single in-water incident can shut down the day, blow the budget, and create serious liability for the production company. Many studios, completion bonds, and production insurance policies require documented water safety coverage before a water scene can roll.

Even a small commercial or photo shoot benefits. A dedicated lifeguard is inexpensive next to the cost of a day lost to an avoidable accident.

When to Put a Lifeguard on the Call Sheet

Plan for a set lifeguard any time your day includes:

• Actors or stunt performers in or under water

• Child performers anywhere near a pool, tank, or open water

• Background talent in a beach, lake, or pool scene

• Tank work, underwater photography, or boat work

• Any scene where cast or crew could end up in deep water

What a Set Lifeguard Does

A production lifeguard watches the water so your 1st AD, stunt coordinator, and safety supervisor can run the day. On set, the guard:

• Provides dedicated water surveillance whenever cast or crew are in or near the water

• Coordinates with the 1st AD, stunt coordinator, and safety supervisor on the day's water work

• Stays ready for immediate rescue and response with a rescue tube, first aid kit, and CPR/AED training

• Conducts a water and pool or tank safety walkthrough before talent gets in

• Stays clear of frame and quiet on set, working around takes and resets

What to Look For When You Hire

Productions run on trust and timing, so vet for both:

• Current certification — American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid

• Insurance and a COI — general liability and workers compensation, with a certificate of insurance sent to your production company, UPM, or line producer

• NDA-friendly — willing to sign a confidentiality agreement

• Full-day reliability — comfortable holding for a long shooting day, including overtime
